Example of using WSFTP to upload your database

WSFTP is an FTP program. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, the system used for moving files between computers attached to the internet. If you have ever used Windows Explorer you will be familiar with dragging and dropping files from one location to another. WSFTP does this but with the content of your machine in one window and our webs erver in the other.

Starting WSFTP

To start the program select Start>programs>WSFTP>WSFTP

You will be greeted by the Session Properties dialogue box:

Fill this in as follows:

Profile name: Something to help you remember what the site is
Host name: ftp.hitchhiker.com or the IP address 212.19.51.169
Host type: automatic detect
User ID: your username as given by Hitchhiker
Password: your password as given by Hitchhiker

Check the "save password" box so you do not need to enter your password each time you log in.

Click OK and the software will connect to our server.
You will now see this page:

The files on your computer are on the left and the files on our server are on the right.
Navigate to the correct directory on your computer by double clicking on the red up arrow at the top of the left hand file list. When you get to the directory where you stored your website files you should see the list of files.

In this example there is only one file - index.html:

Highlight the file you wish to upload.
Click on the "Binary" raion button (next to ASCII )

There will normally only be the one directory listed (robot).
Click on the file(s) you wish to upload.
To select more than one file hold down the control key while you click on them.
Then press the right arrow button (circled) or drag and drop the files to the right hand side:

The file(s) will then be uploaded.
